UK Interest Rates

Closely tied to the UK housing market, interest rates are a key factor in the control of the current house price boom. Able to encourage or discourage the number of mortgage applications and therefore the housing demand within the economy, the base rate of interest is a key factor for affordability.

Interest rates are generally determined by the market, but government intervention – usually by the Bank of England – may strongly influence short-term interest rates, and is used as the main tool of monetary policy.

One of the key factors in keeping the UK economy in shape, interest rates not only affect borrowing and investment, but can also help determine employment and inflation.
